The other thing I would say that I've learned over time is keep really good data. Use consistent naming conventions. So I actually track clicks across everything, Google ads, social media, even the old, good old MailChimp newsletter. And if you don't have good naming conventions, then your data shows up in different ways. So, for example, I made a huge error on LinkedIn. I, I did linked hyphen in, and then I did LinkedIn. And so now I have data on two different lines in my report. Like, ah, curses. So I have this cheat sheet so I know what I've used before. For Google ads, I have parameters…

One tip I would give someone who's maybe in that place of they're just running heavy search and maybe they have some data that, you know, as Anna alluded to and what's working well. Take the keywords, take search terms that are working and use those to build audiences for demand gen because you can target based on, you know, it's not exactly the keyword, but search intent where someone may have searched for those keywords or related topics. I've found that's worked well. And then also look at audiences that are performing. You can see data for, like, in-market audiences, affinity, et cetera…

The other thing that I've done over the years, new products. So, for example, because the budgets are so small, you know, one client said, you know, they had a new product. And we sat down on a call and we looked at the competition, what was going on on Google search and ads. And we're both like, oh, this is going to be really expensive. So I said, let's try a site link. So we did a site link on two other campaigns. And actually, he got some leads from it. So that was very exciting. So, you know, don't be afraid to use site links to test something and to find out what your messages might be.

So a question came in from Sue Kim on YouTube. And they say, I run Google search ads for a personal injury lawyer in California. The CPC is around $900. Max convertible market CPA, 40% conversion rate. But how to improve this? So something I'll say, well, personal injury CPCs can be very high. I would say $900 is like even higher than what I would typically expect in that industry. And when you say a 40% conversion rate, again, if that's true, that will be so lovely for you. But I highly, highly doubt that you're getting a true 40% conversion rate off of a search ad and personal injury…

This is an account that has six clinics in six different cities. And for each clinic, they had, amongst other things, one search campaign with two ad groups. One was their main medical keyword, and the other ad group was called medical-related terms, where they had mushed together everything that they considered that was worth mentioning. But the thing is, if you have 10 different concepts in one ad group, there is no way you can be relevant in an ad or landing page. It's just impossible. Well, because ad groups were actually built for this. Ad groups exist so we can be specific and relevant…

So now, well, since I've been doing search ads since 2018, and I've always focused on site links, but I never really had good data to see if they worked. The Google Ads asset performance report, that's good. I mean, you can look at it and you can say, okay, I can see what Google's using and what it's not. And I can remove the duds and that sort of thing. The other thing, because I was using Matomo and I had to create all these tracking parameters, I created a site link specific tracking parameter. And what I did on that was, so, you know, you have the URL for the campaign or the ad group, I…

Now, as I said, I do content marketing as well for my clients. So I'm writing up all the time, case studies, technical data sheets, frequently asked questions, all kinds of stuff. I'm writing this stuff up and I test it to see if it might be a good site link. Some are. Some are duds. Over the years, I've tested linking to the about page, you know, about pages. One time I linked to a press room. Total dud. I linked to the RFQ button. No, don't ever ask people to marry you on the first date. So I just, you know, this has been years of testing.

So the first thing I do, which is, you know, very basic, just listen to clients and ask questions. So, for example, recently, for one client, we're now doing ads in Europe. And after a couple of months, the salesperson came back and said, you know, we need to beef up our EH&S, our environmental health and safety page. People, I'm hearing this come up in conversations. So I said, okay, so the team and I, their team and I, we worked together. We updated that page. And then she said, well, should we add it to our homepage? And I said, well, how about we add it as a site link on the Europe ads…

This means that your quality score will not improve your conversion rate. That's not how it works. Having a structure that answers the user's questions specifically will improve your conversion rate. The thing is that you're thinking is that, okay, Anna, great. But in theory, if I have a better click-through rate and I have a better quality score, I'll have a better ad rank and lower CPCs. So you must be doing something wrong here. Well, the thing is that we live in a complicated world. Marketing has a lot of inputs and life never works how you want it. At the same time as we were doing this…

So the final note I'll add here is to watch out for auto-created assets. So you might have been as careful as possible to make sure your ad copy is all buttoned up saying what you want and don't want. And then Google pulls in some random site link or some copy from a page that you haven't touched on your client hasn't touched on the site in years. So the easiest way to get here is just to search for account level automated asset settings in your Google ad account and then just make sure that these are all turned off.

And then I'll add an aside where this may be a place where AI can be helpful in the process. I don't want to come across as completely saying, don't use AI for any part of the process, where you could put in pages, your landing pages, other pages in your site related to products and services, any other resources, and maybe even link to competitors. And ask your LLM of choice to tell you, hey, what are some differentiators that my competitors might not be mentioning that I could potentially call out in my copy?

Think about how your headlines, descriptions, the other assets in your ad appear together. The Sears example, you can see they have two headlines that, again, basically say the same thing. Where pinning could solve that. If you pin similar headlines to the same position, Google could rotate through them. And that would give you a little more unique space to add another selling point. The middle one, you can see they have that same day appliance repair and the headline and the description and what looks like a call out and a site link, which, again, not a bad thing to call out. But space that…

But quality score is not a KPI we should obsess over. We should not aim for a perfect 10. We should use quality score to spot where to improve ads, landing pages, or keyword selection. So, what does this mean in real life? At the keyword level, in the Google Ads interface, we have these columns where we can see the actual quality score number and the three pillars that form and inform the quality score. Expected click-through rate, landing page experience, and ad relevance. Meaning that this is the same exact information, just in a fancier dashboard. But it helps us see where exactly we need…

And then think about your unique value propositions. So first of all, avoid being vague wherever possible. So for instance, a phrase like world class sounds great, but how are you backing up the fact that you're supposedly world class? Have you won any awards? Can you show, like Granger does, examples of the number of products that you sell, the number of branches that you have? So using concrete examples, using hard numbers, and then thinking about how can I make life easier for potential customers? So for instance, they're highlighting technical support, bulk order options, where the other…

Again, it depends on the account. Yeah. We don't even know if it's e-commerce or leads. It depends a lot on the account and the goal of the account and the type of business. Because there are businesses who rely a lot on top of the funnel to have some traffic at the bottom of the funnel. And there are businesses that have so much traffic and the CPCs are so high at the middle and bottom of the funnel that you spend all of your budget on the lower funnel keywords, that it's hard to give an exact number. But if I had to go with like a bro recommendation, I would say I always have a 10% budget…

So where can you lean into your unique selling points in the brief space that you're given with ad copy? So the first question I wanted to ask is, do your prospects have an enticing reason to click your ad instead of their competitors when they do a search and see all of them next to each other? So I pulled this example of a search for appliance repair. And you can see everybody's leading with basically the same headline here. So same day appliance repair. You know, that's a positive thing. But again, why would I choose one versus the other? So the first consideration, think about how your…

Yes. But depends on the type of campaigns we're working with. I don't think account structure in terms of search is changing that much. For search, the thing is that we should still, the way I think about it, again, like Diana said, I can't speak for everyone. But the way I think about it is I still need semantic logics and semantic themed ad groups or semantically themed campaigns because AI is working toward semantically similar concepts. They're packing them into synthetic keywords. There are still like the one concept in the one ad group. But you do need flexibility for the ad, like Tim…

Sure. If you have a search heavy account and you have a lot of data and conversion data and the data is actually working for you, I would go testing PMACs. PMACs is working better and better, especially if you have data and conversion data. You can test it out because performance max is not going to go too crazy in terms of upper funnel. It will stay in a mid-low funnel kind of situation where we'll find you new users and new platforms. So that usually helps. If you don't go too broad with the budget, that helps.

And now what I'm doing is I'm looking at how is it appearing in the AI overview. Like, what I have found is that Google is pretty smart. But because I'm working with these micro-niche manufacturers, Google sort of gets it, but they don't understand all the nuance. So sometimes the information is not accurate the way the client would see it as accurate. So now I look at it like, okay, we have this content on the website. What do we need to do not writing for the AI, but just what do we need to do to make it so it understands it better? Does that make sense, Google? Can you find the information…

She says, how does Tim suggest adopting creative while leaving enough flexibility for AI surfaces to serve your brand when and how it has the best chance for success? Of course, wanting that alignment, which has been a theme throughout all the presentations, but then also leaving that flexibility for these newer AI surfaces. I think even kind of going back to the conversation about pinning, thinking about if you're going to pin headlines, maybe pin multiple to the same position. So it actually has room to rotate through a few. So, again, I mean, I think just going back to the presentation…

And also what we're seeing is in search heavy accounts, you have some of the upper funnel keywords are shifting their use and their performance in the search. They're being either driven off of the impression first share due to AI overviews or they're being answered elsewhere. So this means that the mid and low funnel keywords are being more competitive. They're more competitive because the SEO traffic is also being lower. So more traffic is going into PPC. Again, if that's happening, you have to compensate a little bit with demand generation. YouTube helps a lot in terms of being present for…

In real life, in a real account, how does this come up? Well, this is a real case of an account that we restructured recently. I've just changed the medical specialty. Everything else is the same. So one campaign became three different campaigns. We have two campaigns related to their medical specialty and their medical business, and they have their own budget and their own target CPAs.

Well, I've always done content marketing because I'm an old SEO-er. So I do still write content. I write it for my clients, prospects, customers. And it does convert. I mean, it's not – I call content like your content IRA. If you write something that's really helpful that, you know, and it's really well-written, and then it goes on, I do tech tips – like I just said, tech tips, case studies, I think, it sits there. It's like an IRA. And, like, last month, one piece of content that I wrote a year and a half ago got two conversions. I mean, two RFQ requests.

The next consideration I wanted to talk about is thinking about the research process that leads people to see your ad copy in the first place. So I come from an era in PPC where everything was all about matching the ad copy as precisely as possible to the exact phrase that people searched. Obviously, most of us that are in this industry know it doesn't quite work that way anymore.
